Overall Economic Status

In 2005, the gross domestic product (GDP) of Beijing totaled 68.863 billion Yuan, primary industry had an added value of 9.55 billion Yuan, secondary industry achieved an added value of 20.265 billion Yuan, tertiary industry saw continued development with an added value of 47.643 billion Yuan. The city’s financial revenue reached 91.921 billion Yuan, with an increase of 23.5% over the previous year, the city’s expenditure was 105.8 billion Yuan, experienced a 17.8 % increase.

In 2005, the city’s sown areas totaled 192,000 hectare, with 24.7% increase over previous year, the city's total yield reached 949,000 tons, which represented 35.2% increase.

  Industry

By  the  end  of  2005,  there  are  6301  above-designated-size  industrial  enterprises  in  Beijing,  achieved  an  added  value  of  162.7  billion Yuan. Among  which,  Telecommunication  equipment  manufacturing,  Transportation  equipment manufacturing,  Ferrous  metal  smelting  and  pressing,  Raw  chemical  materials  and chemical  products,  Petroleum  processing  and  coking,  Nuclear  fuel  processing  became  the  key  industries  which  support  the  industrial  economy  of  Beijing.  Beijing  had  the  daily  capacity  of  250,000  mobile  telephones  and  1,606  motor  vehicles.

  Construction industry


 Beijing
  has  2752  qualified  construction  enterprises  in  2005,  reached  the  added  value  of  31.95  billion  Yuan,  which  became  the  main  contributors  to  the  city’s  economical  development  and  city’s  construction.

  Finance and Insurance

Beijing,  home  to  headquarters  of  Bank  of  China  and  china’s  big-name  financial  institutions  and  insurance  companies.  In  2005  the  saving  deposit  balance  in  RMB  and  foreign  currency  of  Beijing’s  financial  institutions  (including  foreign-funded  financial  institutions)  reached  2897  billion  Yuan,  the  loan  balance  was  1533.55  billion  Yuan.  The  income  of  Insurance  businesses  both  from  home  and  abroad  totaled  4.982  billion  Yuan,  the  trading  volume  in  various  financial  markets  reached  932.25  billion  Yuan.

  Tourism

Beijing  has  more  than  300  historic  and  scenic  spots,  The  Forbidden  City, the  Great  Wall,  the  Peking  Man  Site  at  Zhoukoudian,  the  Temple  of  Heaven  and  the  Summer  Palace  are  on  the  UNESCO  List  of World Heritage.  By  the  end  of 2005,  there  were  594  star-grade  hotels,  the  average  room  price  was  425  Yuan/day,  the  number  of  foreign  tourists  entering  Beijing  reached  3.63  million,  the  foreign  exchange  income  from  this  industry  reached  US$3.62  billion,  the  number  of  domestic  tourists  reached  0.125  million,  spending  a  total  of  130  billion  Yuan.

  Real Estate

In  recent  years,  the  real  estate  business  has  developed  rapidly.  In  2005  the  added  value  hit  45.53  billion  Yuan  from  this  industry,  and  152.5  billion  Yuan  was  invested  in  real  estate  construction  in  Beijing,  the  floor  space  of  sold  commercial  and  residential  building  reached  about  28,032,000  billion  sq m,  among  which  25,660,000  sq m  was  for  residence.

Beijing  has  arranged  its  commerce  layout  and  developed  its  service  facilities  to meet  the standards of a modern  cosmopolitan city.  It features many  shopping compounds  with  comfortable  shopping  environment.   People  are  now  able  to enjoy  delicacies  of  any  kind  of  Chinese  cuisines  and  from  any  parts  of  the  world.   

Gross  retail  sales  revenue  for  Beijing's  consumer  goods  equaled  290.28  billion  Yuan  in  2005,  among  which  the  retail  sales  of  the  wholesale  and  retail  trade  reached  252.94  billion  Yuan  and  26.8  billion  Yuan  was  from  the  catering.
