Science and Technology

       

Beijing has the nation’s biggest science and technology research bodies. By the end of 2005, there were 7,110 research institutes in Beijing, employing over 3,830,000 scientific and technical personnel.Beijing’s expenditures of S&T funds totaled 70.56 billion Yuan, among which 37.95 billion Yuan was for R&D (research and development). The number of patent applied arrived at 22,572, among which 10,100 were granted, the total turnover of technical contracts reached 48.96 billion Yuan.

  Education

sqsl-shfz-4.gif (24810 字节)Beijing has the nation’s most advanced educational system. Beijing became the nation’s first city which has instituted the Nine-year compulsory education, on top of that, Beijing also was the first city which entered the stage of institute the  higher education.   

By the end of 2005, The regular higher education institutions amounted to 79, with an enrolment of  537,000 students. The most famous ones like Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University and Beijing Normal University. There were also 51 regular higher education institutions and 115 science and technology research institution for graduate  students, the enrollment of the candidates was 165,000.   

There were 917 secondary schools in Beijing in 2005 had an enrolment of 859000 students and 1403 primary schools with an enrolment of 494,000 students.

  Culture and Art

In 2005, there were 160 various film exhibition institutions, among which 58 were cinemas, 34 museums, 26 public libraries, 328 art galleries and Cultural Centers, 36 art performance troupes, 20 archives in Beijing.

  Medical and health work

In 2005, Beijing had 519 various level hospitals, with 72,000 beds, there were also 51,000 certificated doctors in hospitals and clinics. The number of doctors and hospital beds per 1,000 people were 4.32 and 6.65 respectively. By the end of 2005, Beijing emergency medical service center has been founded, and its sub-organizations covered 10 suburb districts and counties.

  Physical culture and sports

Beijing’s physical culture and sports have entered a new phase with the successful bid for the 2008 Olympic games. In 2005, there were 260 national physical fitness projects in Beijing, with total floor space of 104,000 sq m, 4905 institution of morning and evening exercise, the number of people having exercise reached 0.157 billion. There were also over thousand professional athletes, In 2005 they captured 307.5 medals both in international and domestic competitions, among which 118 were gold medals, the 94.5 were silver medals.
